Moving to Germany and want to learn the language? Here are our top 6 ways!

If you are planning to move to Germany or just moved, one of your first priorities on your tick list might be to learn the German language. With thousands of expats relocating to Germany every year, you will not find it difficult to find other English-speaking individuals. Apart from that, the Germans themselves tend to be quite fluent in English, especially in the larger cities. However, learning the native language can only help you improve your experience there and you will discover that your journey gets easier when you are able to speak German. It can help you in your daily life, for work purposes and in addition to that, you will add another strength to your persona. In this article we give you our top six methods you can learn German!

Method 1 – Volkshochschule

This has to be one of the most popular ways to learn German, when in the country. It is a state funded public institution that provides language courses at very affordable prices. It is believed to be the cheapest way to learn the German language and you will find ample locations in Germany offering this course. The only limitation that it poses is that, if you require personal attention, then this might not be the course for you. The reason being is that, most of the time you will be attending the course with around twenty or more people in the class.

Method 2 – Goethe Institute

Also very popular amongst expats and with a main objective on quality learning. At the institute, you can find courses tailored for your level, whether you are a beginner or advanced. The certificate you receive is also internationally recognised and with a tendency of being favoured over others.  As part of their service, you can also opt to learn the language online, where you will have a designated tutor solely for you. The only set back that you might encounter is the price as it can be quite costly when compared to others, due to its high levels of standard.

Method 3 – Babylon School

With similar principles to the Goethe Institute, the Babylon school is loved for its learning environment. You can choose to pay per module, which can be quite affordable, and you can ensure yourself that you can receiving quality learning. The only limitation experienced by expats is that you might need to book well in advance as the waiting time usually takes quite some time.

Method 4 – Babbel

Funded by the European Commission, Babbel is the fun way of learning German. You get to learn German through an app and even though the learning period might not be as fast as with personal courses, it is still quite effective. However, it is mainly used by expats that already have a basic understanding of the language.

Method 5 – Sprachatelier

If you are a culture enthusiast or wish to learn the German culture while learning the language, then this is for you. As a social school, it teaches its students through cultural events.

Method 6 -  Deutsch Fur Dich

If you are on a budget and/or wish to make some new friends while learning in a casual and informal environment, then this option is definitely for you. This differs from the usual courses and class learning techniques and instead, people meet in a public location, such as a bar or café and practise the language there. It is free, or you can choose to give a donation for every lesson.
