The Gateway to Germany
The Port of Hamburg is a large tidal harbor located on the river Elbe. Not only is it the gateway to Germany, but to the world! The port of Hamburg is the largest port in Germany made up of approximately hundred square kilometers. This can be a fun activity for any age group and is best explored by boat. Another option is to visit the pedestrian trail which dates back to the nineteenth century Warehouse District.
Speicherstadt
The city of warehouses. This might not sound very impressing, however, the UNESCO World Heritage site offers spectacular scenery, especially by boat in the evening. Apart from the views, the Speicherstadt is also the largest warehouse district in the world where buildings rest on timber-pile foundations.
Kunsthalle Hamburg
Founded in 1850, the Kunsthalle Hamburg is one of the largest museums in the country. It houses some of Germany’s few art galleries dating back centuries to ago. The Museum is made up of three buildings from 1869, 1921 and 1997. Furthermore, it is home to some of the finest local and foreign art pieces. There are many tours available for adults and children which make it a great activity for all the family or between friends.
Hamburg Rathaus
Also known as the City Hall. This large Neo-Renaissance building was finished in 1897 and is currently the seat of the Government in Hamburg and one of Germany 16 state parliaments. In total, it consists of 647 rooms and a number of them were opened for public viewing in the yearly Long Night of Museums event. While visiting the Hamburg Rathaus one has the opportunity to see the government in action.
St Michael’s Church
This baroque style church was built in the 18th century and it is one of the most important landmarks in the city. A top of the church’s 132-meter tower you will find a picturesque skyline of the city and port. For a good leg workout, you can access this tower by stairs, however, there is also the option to take the elevator.
The Hamburg Museum
Some say, you cannot visit Hamburg, without visiting the Hamburg Museum. This protected national monument was established in 1908 and it consists of an inner courtyard, ship models, displays relating to memorable city events and a fascinating collection of artifacts. For an optimum experience, it is recommended to take one of the tours provided in various languages.
Jenischparck
Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and visit the Jenischpark. It is one of the city’s largest parks where you can simply relax and enjoy the beauty of mother nature. Whether you wish to have a nice stroll in the countryside or visit some of the city’s top museums, this is a place for you. It consists of the famous Neoclassical Jenisch Haus from the 19th century.
